Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 has opened bookings in Tamil Nadu, and the response is not what anyone expected for a sequel to one of Kollywood’s biggest blockbusters. As of October 11, 8:30 PM IST, Tamil Nadu advance bookings stand at ₹7 Cr, with overall occupancy at just 41 percent.
For a Jailer sequel, the expectation was simple. Bookings open, shows sell out within seconds, and the home state goes into a frenzy. That has not happened.
Not the Rush a Jailer Sequel Deserved
To be fair, there are still four days left before the film hits screens on October 15. Rajinikanth films always see a big final rush, and Jailer 2 will easily see housefull occupancies by show time in most centres. That is not the concern.
The concern is the scale of demand. A record opening needs bookings that explode right from the first hour, and that kind of massive demand is missing this time. With the current trend, a record opening in Tamil Nadu looks out of reach.
This is the same story that started with the promotions. The songs and trailer did not meet expectations, and the excitement around the film dropped going into release week. The advance bookings are now reflecting that.
Worldwide Picture Is Similar
It is not just Tamil Nadu. Worldwide pre-sales for Jailer 2 are also not trending close to Coolie and Leo. Overall worldwide pre-sales currently stand at ₹30 Cr+, and the film is moving towards a solid start rather than a record one.
Based on current estimates, Jailer 2 is heading for an opening of around ₹125 Cr gross worldwide. That would make it the third biggest opening in Kollywood history, behind Coolie with more than ₹150 Cr and Leo with close to ₹150 Cr.
Big Number, Smaller Celebration
A ₹125 Cr opening is still a huge number by any standard, and only Rajinikanth’s star power can deliver that with this level of buzz. But for a sequel to Jailer, a film that worked across every territory, the expectation was to cross Coolie and set a new benchmark. Missing that will feel like a setback, especially since both top spots belong to films that were also massively hyped.
The final booking push and the first-day talk will decide the rest. If the reviews are positive, Jailer 2 has the Dasara holidays and Rajinikanth’s pull to make up for a softer start.
